La Alpujarra ( or Las Alpujarras) is a mountain district in Southern Spain/ Andalucia, which stretches south from the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada. The western part of the Alpujarra is located between Granada and the Mediterranean Sea/ Costa del Sol.
The region is of great natural beauty. Because of a warm southerly climate combined with a reliable supply of water for irrigation from the river running off the Sierra Nevada, the valleys of the western part of the Aplujarra are amongst the most fertile in Spain. The terrain exists of small fields on old mourish terraces which contain a rich abundance of fruit trees like grape wines, oranges, lemons, persimmons, figs, almonds, olives and pomme granat (Granadas).
In the Alpujarra you can enjoy some of Europe`s most varied and delightful mountain walking and centuries old Moorish villages where you can treat yourself to good food and wine. A glorious mountain scenery in every direction is bathed in the unrivalled light of Andalucia. Easy day trips will take you to the Mediterranean beaches (just 40 minutes away) or to the cultural wonderland of Granada, one of the great cities of Spain and a paradise for shopping as well.
